Press Release 07/10 - Overwhelming interest leads to second seminar for Suva
Date: 31 May, 2010
Following the keen interest expressed by members of the exporting community, private companies and stakeholders to attend the recently held awareness seminar for exporters, the Fiji Export Council (FEC) and Fiji Trade & Investment Bureau (FTIB) are organising another seminar in Suva on Tuesday 1st June 2010, at JJ’s on the Park from 10am - 3.45pm.
This seminar follows the successful outcome of the one-day seminars in Suva (17th May), Lautoka (19th May) and Labasa (21st May) to create awareness of available incentives, financial assistance schemes and policies implemented by Government to assist local exporters.
According to FTIB Chief Executive Officer Annie Rogers, the overwhelming response shown by exporters wishing to attend is a clear indication that a seminar of this sort was long overdue.
“We were extremely heartened by the positive response and felt it necessary to hold another seminar on the same issue, just to cater for the large number of exporters who were left disappointed earlier. The previous three seminars held in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa generated much needed discussion between the private sector and the local agencies regarding the effectiveness of some of our assistance facilities. I am confident the second Suva seminar will have the same outcome.”
A total of 65 participants attended the seminar in Suva, 52 in Lautoka and 31 in Labasa – a significant difference from the initial targeted number of 50 participants in Suva, 30 in Lautoka and 20 in Labasa.
The main objective of the seminar is to create interest and awareness on the Duty Suspension Scheme (DSS) administered by FEC; the Export Finance Facility (EFF) and the newly announced Import Substitution Facility administered by Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF); to enhance the abilities and successes of Fiji’s companies in exporting their products through better understanding of the DSS, EFF, and export requirements and procedures; and engage exporters in close consultation with relevant agencies such as the FEC, Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA), Department of Quarantine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation & Civil Aviation, RBF and FTIB on export opportunities and relevant issues.
Key speakers include representatives from the FTIB, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation & Civil Aviation, Department of Quarantine, FIRCA, FEC and RBF.
