Despite the wet weather, a good number of private sector representatives turned up for the Export Awareness Seminar and the TFL Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards (EYA) Exhibition held at the Novotel Convention Center in Lami yesterday, which was organized by the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau (FTIB). The Seminar, themed Building Export Success in a Competitive Global Economy aimed at creating awareness on export procedures and requirements that exporters must adhere to when trading in a highly competitive global market and the EYA itself.

Participants at the Export Seminar 2011General Manager of the 2010 TFL Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year, Goodman Fielder International (GFI), Mr. Shaun Joils, officiated as Chief Guest and provided an overview of GFI’s functions, highlighting strategies undertaken by his company to achieve success in the international trade arena. Goodman Fielder’s wide range of exports include Tucker’s Ice-Cream, Crest Chicken; its markets are New Zealand, USA, Papua New Guinea, American Samoa, Tonga, In its presentation, FTIB provided an overview of the EYA with much emphasis on the requirements for applicants. One of the objectives of the EYA is to promote top exporters as corporate role models in order to stimulate greater involvement in exporting amongst Fijian businesses.

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) addressed questions relating to taxation and duty suspension schemes designed for Fijian Exporters.. A representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Co-operation drew attention to Fiji’s Trade Agreements with major trading partners. Furthermore, it was highlighted that Fiji Embassies based in foreign countries are always willing to assist Fijian Exporters as part of their role to boost trade and investment in Fiji. The Seminar accommodated close to fifty private sector participants who made the most of this opportunity to have open discussions with Government Representatives.

FTIB Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ravuni Uluilakeba mentioned that the seminar is to create awareness on the latest developments, export-related programs and facilities available for exporters. He hoped that “this forum of information exchange will enhance (your) understanding of trading on the international scene and strengthen (your) contacts with the agencies that have been mandated to look after (your) needs as an exporter”.

There were presentations made by the Bio-Security Authority of Fiji addressing issues relating to quarantine and inspection standards in Fiji, and the Food Unit from the Ministry of Health focusing on the Food and Safety Regulations. The participants were from various sectors, including fishing, technology, manufacturing, mineral water and finance sectors.

The Seminar also featured a cheque handover by Telecom Fiji Limited, the major sponsor of the TFL Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards. TFL’s commitment in sponsoring the Event for further two years is a definite support to local exporters in taking Fiji to the world. Telecom Fiji Limited CEO, Mr. Rohan Mail officially handed a cheque to FTIB for the organizing of the 2011 TFL Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards. There are two more seminars scheduled for this week, with one happening in Lautoka on Wednesday and the final one in Labasa on Friday.

The CEO FTIB’s last words on the seminar,” It is seminars such as these that help our exporters in taking Fiji to the international arena and the FTIB shall continue in its efforts to boost trade and investment in Fiji.”
